Real Madrid Icon Guti Hails Lamine Yamal Ahead Of El Clasico

As anticipation builds for the season’s first El Clasico, Barcelona head into the fixture carrying the weight of being branded undisputed favourites by pundits and former players alike. While former Barcelona star Gerard Pique has publicly predicted an easy win for the Blaugrana, ex-Real Madrid midfielder Guti has taken a decidedly different stance, tipping his former club to secure a thrilling victory at the Camp Nou.

However, amidst his Madrid allegiances and desire for Carlo Ancelotti’s side to triumph, Guti has offered a glowing assessment of Barcelona’s teenage talisman, Lamine Yamal. Speaking in an interview with SPORT, the former Los Blancos star did not hesitate to elevate the Spanish wunderkind to the upper echelon of world football ahead of the high-stakes clash.

Guti in Awe of Lamine Yamal’s Rise

Lamine Yamal has continued to captivate European football with his composure, creativity, and decisive contributions in the final third. For Guti, acknowledging the exceptional talent of a Barcelona player requires looking past club rivalries.

“Lamine is very confident, right now he’s at a very good level, he’s one of Barça’s most decisive players and also one of the most important players in the world.”— Guti, Former Real Madrid Midfielder

Despite his historical allegiance to the white shirt of Madrid, Guti went further, suggesting that Yamal’s current trajectory places him firmly in the conversation for football’s ultimate individual accolades.

“It’s clear that even though he’s from Barcelona and I’m not a big fan of that club, you have to recognise that he’s a fantastic player. If he keeps playing like this, he’ll surely be a contender for Player of the Year and a Ballon d’Or winner in the coming years. He has a very promising future.”— Guti, Former Real Madrid Midfielder

Tactical Warning Against Excessive Focus on Yamal

While acknowledging Yamal’s immense threat, Guti was quick to issue a cautionary note to his former club regarding tactical preparations. Concentrating exclusively on shutting down the teenager could leave vulnerabilities open across other areas of Barcelona’s attacking structure.

“Real Madrid would be wrong to focus only on him, because alongside Lamine there is Fermin, who is doing very well; there is Rodri; there is Raphinha… Mourinho’s team has to look at all the players.”— Guti, Former Real Madrid Midfielder

The Open Ballon d’Or Race

Beyond the immediate weekend fixture, Guti also shared his thoughts on the wider landscape of individual accolades, noting that the race for the Ballon d’Or remains wide open. While expressing his personal desire to see Kylian Mbappe claim the prize, he acknowledged that multiple stellar candidates are currently vying for football’s highest individual honor.

“I would love for Mbappe to win it, but anything can happen, I think it’s very open. Mbappe, Lamine, Rodri, or even Harry Kane have a chance. I think this is the year it’s most open; anyone can win it,” Guti reflected, adding that seeing either Mbappe or Yamal lift the trophy would come as no surprise given their exceptional output.

As the countdown to El Clasico ticks down, Guti’s analysis provides a fascinating bridge between club loyalties and objective footballing appreciation, setting the stage for what promises to be a memorable encounter at the Camp Nou.
